Printmaking Classes @ EcoFemme
The main source of revenue for the artists is by featuring their art on products, such as postcards, bookmarks, and notebooks. However, since the products are entirely handmade, the process is extremely inefficient. In order to solve this issue, I organized and led Printmaking Classes, as carved prints are intended for multiple uses. I led five classes with Miyah and “Aisha,” a refugee from Morocco. They now teach printmaking to other refugees, and printmaking has become the main art-technique used at Ecofemme.
Day #1: July 9th 2019
• introduction into how to use printmaking tools through eraser carving with an emphasis on safety.
Day #2: July 16th 2019
• Transferred sketches from homework onto linoleum. Aisha and Miyah both used images and patterns from their mother countries - Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
• Polished the basic printmaking skills from the first lesson.
Day #3: July 23rd 2019
• Printed on canvas tote bags to create design samples for long-term production.
• Continued to create a variety of original eraser and linoleum-cut stamps.
Day #4: July 30th 2019
• Created more design samples and introduced more advance printmaking skills to enable more intricate stamps.
Day #5: August 5th 2019
• Visited Aisha's house for the final lesson because Aisha's knee surgery made it difficult for her to commute to the Ecofemme office.
• Completed design samples and picked out designs to create on a larger-scale for sale!
